When you’re looking to make a change in your career, it’s so important to make sure you find the right job.
There are a number of things to consider.
First, is your new job it going to pay you enough money?
This IS important.
It’s not just about how much you get paid; it’s whether you perceive that what you’re being paid represents your value.
Maybe taking a pay cut is necessary to fit in with what everyone else is paid in the market. If you can align with that, the money itself is not as important as you feeling valued and that you’re receiving what you’re worth.
Next: are you going to like the people you’re working with?
You’ll be regularly interacting with these people, so it’s essential that you can build healthy relationships with capable people that you can trust and rely on.
Another thing to consider when finding the right job is whether you’re going to enjoy the daily tasks
It’s very important to understand the job requirements. Make sure you ask for a copy of the job description before you go to the interview.
You need to know what you’ll be expected to do.
Do you want to do more or less of what you’re currently doing? Are you looking for a promotion, a more junior role, or something different?
Maybe there are tasks you’re currently doing that you never want to do again. It’s important to find a role that aligns with what you want to be doing.
Something else to consider, which many people don’t, is the physical environment
We are all, affected by our physical surroundings. Make sure you know what your workspace will be like.
Will you enjoy being in a crowded, busy space with lots of people, or would you prefer your own office?
Some people can’t stand being in an office all day; they need to be out and about meeting people.
What’s your preference? Be aware of your physical needs in a work environment, considering it’s a place you’ll be for hours at a time.
The next thing is flexibility
We all have personal lives and need some kind of flexibility in terms of commitment to work and work-life balance.
How flexible is the employer going to be to meet the needs of your personal life? Do you have children or other dependents you need to support, at times during work hours?
It’s important to consider what balance you need. Some people need less flexibility, and some need more. Know what you need and what the employer is willing to offer.
Most importantly finding the right job is making sure you love what you do
This can be as simple as finding that fine balance between being bored at work, being overwhelmed, or having just the right amount of challenge.
Don’t try to aim too high for a promotion, and don’t step down too far either.
Find that balance and understand what the right fit for you is. It’s usually not exactly what you’ve done before, so figure out what is new that you want to try doing next.
Finally, when finding the right job, look at future opportunities.
Are you seeking growth or stability? Everyone has different needs at different times in their lives.
When we start our careers, we generally want growth, training, and development. Later in life, we might look less for growth and more to give back to the community and others.
So, what opportunities are you looking for with the employer?
Consider this and make sure the employer is willing to align with what you want to do next.
These are just a few tips and hints about things to consider that don’t always come first to mind when looking find the right job.
